Redshift of light from distant stars/objects.?

Lately I've read that the red shift of light coming from distant objects is caused not only by the doppler effect but also by the expansion of space as the light pes through it. This theoretically is what accounts for the loss of energy. Is it possible that the energy lost from the light is causing the expansion of space? Or some of it?
