My ford focus 1.8tdci will not start, how can i read error codes without a reader from the ecu?

The battery drained completely and was left for months, now i'm trying to sell, i cant get it to start, i need to read error codes from ecu, i have been told i can do this without a laptop and reader from the ecu, can anyone help with either issue
