I have chonic tmj with crunching noises and locking of the jaw doc seems to not want to keep taking vicdin why?

i am having a mri tomarrow. Just wondering why antiinflamitory meds like alieve and tylenol or ibprofine are what dr's seem to always lean towards these drugs and not what really makes it some what bearable is vicodin.?????
